Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions and fair terms of trade for producers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay above market prices, Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminate against the poorest, weakest producers. It helps them to improve their lot and have more control over their lives.
Producers supplying Fairtrade products are inspected and certified. They receive a minimum price that covers the cost of sustainable production and an extra premium that is invested in social or economic development projects.
The Fairtrade Foundation awarded the College Fairtrade status in December 2005. All tea and coffee served on campus is Fairtrade and there are many Fairtrade products on sale in the College Shop.
