Water

We use nearly 50% more water today than 25 years ago. Although most of the earth's surface is covered in water, over 97% of it is salty. Fresh water makes up 3% of water on the planet of which only 0.3% is available for consumption.

Water is precious yet most homes flush a third of theirs down the toilet. The College's water is metered - every litre is charged. We also have to pay a sewerage charge for every litre that goes down the plug, so water costs us twice over. Be water wise:

  • Report dripping taps here.
  • Turn off taps properly.
  • Don't leave taps running while you are brushing your teeth.
  • Fit a water saving device in your toilet cistern and save up to 3 litres every time you flush.
  • Wash vegetables in a bowl rather than under a running tap.
  • Only use the washing machine if you have a full load. You can always share a load with a friend.

Did you know…? A tap dripping at a rate of one drip per second wastes 4,000 litres of water per year
