Student Experience

Graduation seemed in the distant future when I started my degree, but it certainly comes around quickly! I was initially a little nervous about the ceremony, but the day was wonderful.

I was slightly unusual in the fact that I had eight guests attend my graduation. My biggest tip would be to buy your tickets early and once the extra tickets go on sale if you cannot get as many as you need call the graduation ceremonies enquiry number. I phoned to say I needed 6 extra tickets and they were really helpful.

You begin the day picking up your robes. I made sure I arrived early to get my photos taken before the ceremony. This was so that my family and I beat the queues and my hair and make up still looked good!

Then all the Graduands go into the Windsor Auditorium, while the guests take their seats in the Chapel or the Picture Gallery. In the Windsor building you are put in alphabetical order, and the Dean will then talk you through what will happen during the ceremony. The Principal or one of the Vice Principals will then congratulate you and will wish you good luck. Everyone then files out and you process through Founders building, going through the Chapel twice. It is on the second time round that you are presented to the Principal. It was so nice to walk through the Chapel and see my family beaming. Everyone is scared of tripping up or falling over, but as long as your heels aren’t too high and you don’t walk too fast you will be OK!

After graduation everyone gathers in the South Quad for sparkling wine and canapés. If the sun is shining this is the perfect way to end the day. You get to catch up with your friends and lecturers and take the famous mortar board throwing picture on the South Quad steps. Graduation was a really important day for me and will stick with me for a long time. It was the perfect way to finish my academic career at Royal Holloway and I would encourage all finalists to take part.
