Living in a shared room is a very different living experience to having the privacy of your own room. Many students become close friends with their sharing partner and it can be an excellent way of ensuring you have one companion from the start of your time as a student. However, it also requires some compromising and it is important that you think about how your environment would be different and whether you want to commit to this before accepting a shared room. In the unfortunate circumstance that you find sharing a room difficult, the College will not relocate you to a single room, so lifestyle differences do have to be managed once you have accepted a shared contract. The following rules will help and we ask every student who is sharing to abide by them.
-
There must be absolute respect for your room-mate and their possessions
-
It is advisable to agree a clear & fair division of space within the room and then to keep to it.
-
You need to show respect for the other person’s lifestyle & beliefs e.g. sexual orientation, religious behaviour, even if it differs from your own.
-
Daily routines and sleep patterns differ. All students are expected not to disturb others after 11pm – this is especially important in shared rooms. Please liaise with your room-mate about potential disturbances to each other, e.g. guests and returning to your room late at night.
-
Overnight guests are not allowed in any rooms. In shared rooms please expect to keep any guests and noise to a minimum at all times.
-
During unsociable hours, i.e. before 9am and after 10pm guests are not permitted to be in your room at all.
-
Generally you should organise your social-lives in a way that ensures your room-mate does not constantly feel excluded or marginalised in their own room.
-
Communication is vital for a healthy mutual atmosphere. You need to make the necessary efforts not to impede your neighbours space.
-
For the comfort of yourself and your neighbour it is important to act in a decent manner at all times. Therefore, you should remain decent in your attire and how you behave with your guests. Any behaviour that would make your neighbour feel uncomfortable is unacceptable.
-
A degree of cleanliness and tidiness should always be maintained, with food and litter not being kept in the room
-
Any problems should be discussed with you room-mate in the first instance. If you cannot resolve a difficulty, the Hall Warden will be pleased to offer advice on how to sort it out.
If a sharer flagrantly fails to act reasonably (and this includes failing to follow the guidelines above) the Hall Warden may consider disciplinary action. However the main responsibility for finding a liveable compromise does rest with the students who have opted to share themselves.
A Residential Support Assistant is on duty each evening after 7.00pm and over the weekend for urgent issues that need addressing at the time. They should be contacted via the hall reception or Security Services (01784 443063). Non-urgent issues can be addressed at the Residential Support Office, emailing residentialsupport@rhul.ac.uk or calling 01784 443955 during the day Monday-Friday.
The Residential Support Office is in Founders West 170. Directions: Enter Founders North Quad at the clock-tower, turn right and walk under the balcony towards entering the building. Turn left as you enter and there are signs on the doors. We have lots of leaflets and information, as well as personal safety alarms which you are welcome to collect
