Research Interests

Social history of early medieval medicine in Europe and Byzantium; history of the family; Mediterranean studies; environmental history; theory and philosophy of history.

I am also a co-director, with Pauline Croft, of the Wellcome Trust-funded research project on The Health of the Cecils, and director of another Wellcome-funded project, Byzantine Medical Manuscripts: Construction and Use.
