Research

We have more than 30 research-active staff and over 100 PhD students, making us one of the largest History departments in the UK. 

 

Our academics publish scholarly books and edit and contribute to learned journals worldwide, regularly broadcasting on radio and television, providing their expertise in the production of historical programmes.

 

We have access to specialist resources and archives on site, and run joint programmes and training with major historical collections, such as the Imperial War Museum, the Weiner Library and the National Trust.

We also host public lectures such as:

• Our annual Hayes-Robinson public lecture celebrating History here. In March 2012, Professor Catherine Hall (UCL) spoke on 'Displaced histories: memories of the slave trade and slavery'.
• Our annual Holocaust Research Centre. In 2012 Luke Holland (award-winning TV documentary and film-maker) spoke on filming former Nazis and perpetrators speaking about their part in the crimes of the Third Reich.
