On Sunday 17th June 16 intrepid members of Royal Holloway's Campus Services team completed the arduous 54 mile London to Brighton Bike Ride in support of the British Heart Foundation.
The team, nicknamed ‘Happy Campus’, along with their support crew, departed from main campus at 7am, when most of us were probably enjoying a Sunday lie in. Having made it to London, they then set off, on their bikes, from the Clapham Common start line at 8.45am with the first members of the squad arriving in Brighton at 12.30pm. Along the way they encountered punctured tyres, sun burnt legs, wasp stings, near misses and sore bottoms!
So far they have raised over £1,200 for the British Heart foundation, with more sponsorship money coming in. If you would like to (retrospectively) sponsor them you can do so at their JustGiving page http://www.justgiving.com/teams/HappyCampus.
In total, more than 27,000 cyclists took part in the ride, with the 247m climb up Ditchling Beacon in East Sussex proving the most gruelling section of the ride. The team are now considering their next challenge, the Palace to Palace (Buckingham Palace to Windsor Castle) a mere 45 miles!
The team members were Jack Beaty, Elaine Butler, Denis Crowley, Natalie Dobson, David Donaghue, Joe Goldsmith, Paul Innes, Matt King, Mel Loizou, Stuart Milne, Warren Milne, Dave Prosser, Joanna Roberts, Stephan Scheiner, Nick Skou, and Colin Westover.
Their support crew were Darren Bathews, Daren Bezants, Keith Cave, Linda Cummings and Alison McGinnes.
