Undergraduate management courses

The School attracts intelligent and self-motivated students, who contribute to and benefit from a lively and stimulating academic environment. Our entry requirements reflect the high quality and reputation of our programmes. Intake each year is limited to 400 undergraduate students on our single, joint or minor honours degrees.

The structure of all our degree programmes has the advantage of providing students with considerable flexibility as to the range of subject areas studied. Our specialist pathway degrees are designed to enable students to pursue a deeper understanding of one of the core areas of management in addition to learning about key management theories. Joint honours programmes involve collaboration with other top-rated departments in the College such as Mathematics and Computer Science.

Our overall approach to learning is to adopt a creative attitude to problem solving. Students will be shown how to research a topic and how to organise, analyse and interpret data. Students are positively encouraged to acquire the skills and competencies necessary for the development of creative and decision-making capabilities. Independent learning is strongly encouraged.

The School of Management offers two single honours programmes: the flagship BSc Management| programme, which has formed the basis of our undergraduate teaching since 1994; and the BSc Management with a Year in Business| programme, which includes an industrial placement in the third year of study.

The programme starts with an introduction to Management, through the study of topics including Intrepreting Management, Marketing, Human Resource Management, Quantitative Methods, Accounting, Sustainability and International Business. In the second year, all students are required to take six core courses plus two optional courses; by the final year, students are required to take two core courses supplemented by optional courses. Optional units have previously included: Strategic Management Accounting & Finance; Brands and Branding; Multinational Enterprise; E-Commerce; Project Management and a Dissertation unit.

Students studying the Year in Business course will follow a similar pathway, as well as being offered support in finding a placement for the third year. During the placement year, students are fully supported by the host organisation and the School. Placements typically last between nine and twelve months and are paid positions. Students will have the opportunity to put into practice elements of the academic management theory studied in first and second years. Students will also gain an understanding of the day-to-day running of a company, an insight into the managerial skills needed in business, and experience of a range of practical work-based situations.

Assessment is through a combination of end of year examinations and coursework, as well as group projects and presentation assignments.

Specialism programmes enable students to gain a deeper understanding of a specific area of management, in addition to studying core courses that provide an overview of the key elements of academic management theory. Specialisms include:

All of these programmes can also be studied with the Year in Business.

Assessment is through a combination of end of year examinations and coursework, as well as group projects and presentation assignments.

Joint honours students spend half their time in each department. For Management & Spanish (BA), the School of Management is the home department, which means that we will assign students personal tutors and deal with any administrative issues.

For the following programmes, the School of Management is not the home department, so student registrations are dealt with elsewhere:

Economics & Management (BSc)
|

French & Management (BA)
|

German & Management (BA)
|

 Italian & Management (BA)
|

Mathematics & Management (BSc)|

Computing & Business (BSc)|

Students taking management as a minor subject spend three quarters of their time studying another subject, and take one management course a year. Minor honours programmes are Mathematics with Management (BSc)| and Computer Science with Management (BSc).|

We would recommend that you check the Mathematics |and Computer Science| web pages for more information about these departments.
