Royal Holloway, University of London is a College of the University of London. The University of London is a federal university, founded in 1836. The year 2000 marked a century of membership of the federation by Royal Holloway. The University of London comprises over 60 institutions of varying size and profile, from colleges with many thousands of students to small research institutes. It is the largest and most diverse university in Britain and one of the largest in Europe. University of London degrees have an international reputation for excellence.
We receive numerous applications from candidates abroad: from member states of the European Union, from North America, South East Asia, Japan, Africa, and elsewhere. We are very glad to add to the international quality of our student body by admitting foreign applicants whenever they are suitably qualified for our courses.
We recognise a wide range of qualifications including the International Baccalaureate and various national school-leaving examinations. Beyond that, we have to satisfy ourselves that candidates who are not native speakers of English will be able to cope well with our language of instruction. As it is usually not possible to assess the academic potential and personal motivation of overseas candidates by means of an interview, we often ask such candidates to send us samples of their written work in English - generally on social science subjects.
Candidates from overseas should use the UCAS procedure in submitting their applications but they may also wish to obtain special guidance before and during their application. Advice can be obtained by writing direct to the College Admissions Officer.
The student body in the Department is diverse. We have a policy of encouraging applications from overseas students and from mature candidates. It is Departmental policy to stimulate academic excellence in an atmosphere of tolerance and mutual understanding. We believe this works - our students say that they enjoy and benefit from the Department's diversity and its relaxed atmosphere.
