What is the Royal Holloway Baby Lab?

The Royal Holloway Baby Lab is a research facility in the Department of Psychology at Royal Holloway, University of London in Egham. We study the development of cognitive abilities during infancy, including memory and thinking. We invite you and your baby to help us explore this exciting period of development!

What would my baby do?

Because babies can't "tell" us what they know, we design simple games that allow them to "show" us what they know. Your baby would sit on your lap or in a baby seat next to you. We would then present him or her with an interesting event to watch and observe his or her behavior. For  example, in one study we might hide a novel toy and then videotape your baby’s reaching and looking behaviour afterwards. Based on our past experience, babies find these games enjoyable. Also, all studies are approved for ethics and safety.

How much time would be involved?

We understand that families with babies and young children are very busy. Your participation would only involve one visit, at a time that is convenient for you. Depending on the study, your visit would last about 45-60 minutes. We can usually also provide babysitting for siblings during the visit.

Would we receive anything for participating?

Yes, your baby would receive a small gift such as a toy. Parking is free and close to the building.

How old are the babies who participate?

Currently, we are interested in having babies between the ages of 0 and 11 months enrol| in our database to participate in our studies.
