I joined Royal Holloway in March 2008 as an Educational Development Officer (HSS) and the Deputy Head of Academic Development Services. I manage the provision of professional and educational development activities for teaching staff offered by the educational development team, which include the academic programmes for new lecturers (CAPITAL) and postgraduate tutors (inSTIL). I am particularly interested in assessment and feedback issues and promoting inclusive practice. In my role as an educational development officer I am also able to provide support and advice to my link faculty History and Social Science.
My professional background was initially in Speech and Language Therapy and I was a practitioner in the NHS for 17 years. I moved into educational development to deliver continuing professional development courses for health and education staff that included bespoke ‘Training the Trainers’ courses. In 2003 I took up a post at Reading University where I led the modules ‘Adult Learning’ and ‘Assessment and Evaluation’ on the MA Education (Health & Social Care). I moved to the Oxford Centre for Staff and Learning Development at Oxford Brookes University in 2005, where I was course leader of the Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education and the Associate Teachers course.
My qualifications include an MSc in Clinical Communication Studies and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education. I have several publications that include practical guides on developing effective communication and writing skills.
