  • Name
  • College email address
  • Course/position (e.g. PhD student in….., technician in……)
  • Teaching responsibilities (past, current and/or future) with approximate dates: please note that you must be teaching at the time you are participating in inSTIL
  • Username (e.g. cc\vmyl049)
  • Student ID number (if you are enrolled on another RHUL programme, e.g. PhD)
  • Your first choice of Introductory Day dates, and any of the others that you could attend

Once you have attended an introductory day, you can register for your other sessions (typically ~8 hours of workshops). The introductory days are all from 10am to 3pm in International Building 243, and will be on: Thursday 20th, Friday 21st, Thursday 27th and Friday 28th October 2011. If you will be teaching in the 2011-12 academic year, please try to attend one of the introductory days in October, as this will greatly simplify completing inSTIL for you.

More about inSTIL

The aims of inSTIL are to provide participants with:

  • the skills necessary to promote effective student learning in HE;
  • the confidence required for effective teaching;
  • a basis for your future career development.

After successful completion of inSTIL, participants will be able to:

  • Independently plan and deliver effective teaching sessions employing a variety of strategies appropriate to your role in College, and give constructive feedback on the progress of other learners;
  • Demonstrate an appreciation of how student diversity, and individual needs, can be accommodated in your teaching strategies to promote equality of opportunity, student engagement in learning, and ‘ownership’ of the learning process by your students;
  • Critically appraise published research into teaching and learning, and apply such scholarship to inform your own teaching approaches;
  • Participate constructively in a community of learners, and demonstrate how your own teaching practices could foster active participation and collaboration among learners;
  • Continually use a variety of sources of evidence to evaluate the experiences of learners, critically reflect on your impact, and thereby plan for improvements in your teaching practice.

inSTIL activities include ‘How do Students Learn?’; ‘Evaluating Your Teaching’; ‘Teaching to Student Diversity’; ‘Teaching in Small Groups’; ‘Lecturing’, ‘Assessment, Marking & Giving Feedback’; and several teaching observations.

Completion of inSTIL can be seen to constitute five days of training in the Generic Skills Programme.
