CRGR - About Us
The foundation of the Centre for the Reception of Greece and Rome in 2007 was our response to the need for a hub where interests among members of staff and postgraduate students in many disciplines across Royal Holloway can be coordinated within the Classics Department.
Its focus is on the sociological, political, philosophical and historical bridges between the contemporary world and Mediterranean antiquity, above all the roles played by ancient Greece and Rome in discourses about citizenship. The centre will also act as a platform for the development of new individual, collaborative, and interdisciplinary projects.
Thinking about the Greek and Roman Classics has been constitutive of virtually every area of modern life: political theory, sociology, anthropology, philosophy, art, music, literature, architecture, the military, government, gender politics, gay rights, post-colonialism, civil rights, medicine, engineering, entertainment, theatre, cinema and sport. They are all part of the discussion at the CRGR.
NEWSFLASH! 2010-11 is shaping up to be an exciting year! The acclaimed poet and playwright Tony Harrison is joining us as Artist in Residence, January to March 2011, generously funded by the Leverhulme Trust. The writer, director and theatre producer Helen Eastman has joined us as holder of our AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award jointly with Northern Broadsides Theatre Company.
We are also running three conferences:
