Dr. Annamarie Schimmel, 'Thirst' in Nightingales Under the Snow|
Dr. Sarah Ansari's research focuses on the recent history of South Asia, in particular those parts of the subcontinent that became Pakistan in 1947.
Interviewed for this podcast by Professor of Classics Edith Hall, Dr. Ansari opens up about how she came to study this part of the World and introduces us to Sufism, a mystical and "gentler" side of Islam. She also speaks about how she first encountered the work of Annamaria Schimmel, the famous multi-lingual Harvard professor and author of more than 50 books on Islamic literature, mysticism and culture, and how their two careers intersected.
This is a personal and fascinating journey through the lives of two women enthralled by the people and culture of the Sindh region in Pakistan.
