The criteria
used for assessment are
- evidence of appropriate reading
- factual accuracy
- evidence of having an understanding of the historiographical
and historical issues of your selected topics
- evidence of having an understanding of the broad historical
problems of first-century Alexandria and of Egyptian history.
- evidence of an understanding of the problems of using
literary sources for historical investigations and of using
Philo's work.
- appropriate use of primary material of literary, epigraphic
or archaeological origin other than the In Flaccum to solve
historical problems
- structuring the project according to the guidelines
- use of appropriate evidence to support claims
- clarity and cogency of argument
Grade Criteria
A submission
which achieves the following grades will probably have the
following characteristics:
49-40
evidence of having extended knowledge through reading; of
having understood some aspect(s) of the topics; but will be
largely descriptive rather than analytical; the structure
may lack clarity; it may not contain all relevant information
which might be expected; presentation could be improved
59-50
a good description of then topic, including most major salient
points; indicate wide reading; have an adequate structure
and an evaluative conclusion, but tend to be descriptive rather
than analytical and display significant weaknesses in understanding
of historical problems and historiographical issues and in
argumentation. Presentation will be generally good.
69-60
demonstrate extensive reading; a good grasp of the key elements,
and an analytical approach throughout. The structure will
be clear, and used to present a strong argument. There will
be some minor weaknesses in the understanding of historical
and historiographical problems, most often in the general
interpretative context or in the understanding of the broader
implications of the presented argument. It will be relevant
to the set title, and the presentation will be good.
80-70
demonstrate extensive reading, an analytical approach which
may include some original insights or insights beyond those
published in the available literature, be presented in completely
appropriate and coherent academic discourse. The structure
will be very clear and the contact will be entirely relevant
to the title. There will be few, if any, weaknesses in the
understanding of historical and historiographical problems
and the implications of the argument will be fully and coherently
expressed. The presentation will be excellent.
