GG3044 - People and the Ice Age

This course examines human adaptation to changing environments during and immediately after the last ice age. The course integrates study of the physical environment (ice age climate, glaciation, sea ice), ice age flora and fauna, and human adaptations, based on the fossil record and archaeology.

The main themes are:

  • Overview of Pleistocene environments;
  • Late Pleistocene environments of Europe, Asia, North America, south America, and Australia;
  • Human adaptations to Late Pleistocene environments in these regions;
  • Extinction of megafaunal mammals;
  • Pleistocene art from caves and burials;
  • The demise of Neanderthals;

Postglacial environments and human adaptations in Europe, Asia, and the New World.
