The Play Project is a project run by the members of RHUL Drama Society.. Together we run a series of workshops fortnightly on Monday evenings at Egham Youth Centre, teaching the Youth Club members drama games and getting them interested in acting. We find that such activities also help boost the childrens confidence, encouraging them to be outgoing and active, it also forges a link with our local community.
The students who run these workshops are from a variety of backgrounds, not all of them with a history of drama. We have students running these workshops taking a wide range of subjects including: Psychology, Social Studies, Drama, English, Media Studies, French and German. Most of our students have an interest in teaching and acting, but we also find that students interested in social psychology, charity work, nursing, drama therapy, directing and child psychology also find these workshops useful for there studies.
As well as our workshops, the Play Project aids the societies' directors and actors of their plays to hold school workshops for plays that they are putting on during the term. This may take the form of a 'school night' for the performance, where schools may come to see a Drama Society show accompanied by a set tour, 'meet and greet' with the actors and crew, and director run workshop teaching school students about the play before they watch it. It may also take the form of a school visit from the play, where the director, cast and crew visit the students and run workshops with them in the comfort of their own school.
We aim to grow as a Project throughout the years, working closely with our Society and the Community Action Team to create a strong community drama group. We also wish to expand to do other workshops in the local area and run specialised classes and workshops for our own students teaching them about other forms of theatre such as disabled theatre and drama therapy.
Workshops are also being run regularly at the Manorcroft Primary school in Egham.
