This information is for international students of Royal Holloway's Community Action volunteering programme.
International students are in a great position to conbtribute something unique and valuable to the local community.
As a Community Action volunteer you will be able to work alongside other volunteers on a whole range of community projects which develop your use of language, self confidence and a wide varity of skills. It is also a great way to make new friends and interact with the local community.
"During my time at Royal Holloway Community Action I was able to help the local community, but also develop my communication and teaching skills further. It feels good to help others.”
Chris Berger, Germany
If you would like to get involved with Community Action please register as a volunteer online. Once registered you can select your project and get further details. You may then be asked to complete a CRB disclosure (free service to volunteers) and obtain a certificate of good conduct or local police check from your home nation before you can start volunteering.
What is a CRB disclosure? It
is a legal requirement that all volunteers who work with vulnerable
people (children, frail elders,
the disabled and others) apply for Criminal Records Bureau
disclosure (a search of police records). This is a routine requirement
for all volunteers in the UK which we hope will not deter you
from volunteering. The CRB disclosure gives you clearance and protection in your volunteering work. A criminal record does not automatically exclude
you from volunteering. Community Action takes this legal requirement very seriously
and requires all its volunteers to apply for a
CRB disclosure. You will not be able to volunteer with vulnerable
people without one. For further information go to our CRB how to page for more specific information and links.
Community Action has initiated an International Team to support and create opportunities for international students to get involved with the local community. Each year the team hosts specific events with external Community Partners to introduce the benefits of volunteering for international students.
“I participated in the Community Action International Student Team to make the most of my overseas education and to communicate with people from various cultural and educational backgrounds. The team has an active role in local charitable activities and volunteering projects. It trained me in developing my communication skills in addition to lectures. It has been my honour to be involved in this fantastic group.”
