Welcome from the Head of Department
We are proud to continue the long tradition in the college of successful social work education and research into health and social care. We aim to deliver high quality teaching and research outputs and to develop and support research informed practitioners and policy/practice informed researchers. We attempt to break down traditional barriers between academics, practitioners and policy makers to ensure the best learning experience for our students.
The entire range of research and teaching within the department derives from the key objective of ensuring that contemporary social work and health policy and practice can be informed at every level by a sound knowledge and value base. We are committed to developing critically reflective practitioners who can provide effective social work provision for the most vulnerable in our society within an anti oppressive framework.
The department works in close partnership with a large number of statutory and voluntary agencies, including the majority of London boroughs, and child care agencies such as the NSPCC and Barnardo's. For the past decade we have been providing the most successfully post qualifying child care programme in London. We have an active service users and carers advisory group, and service users and carers are involved in all aspects of our programme delivery.
We have a diverse student body and staff group reflecting our commitment to inclusion and participation. Our students benefit from the wide-ranging expertise of our staff team, specialist visiting lecturers and practitioners. In addition, our qualifying students benefit from the varied experiential and practice learning opportunities offered within their practice placements. We offer a supportive learning experience, and provide an established and flexible framework for continuing professional development.
The department is located on two sites. The qualifying Masters programme is located on the College campus at Egham in Surrey, and the post qualifying and continuing professional development social work programmes are located in our central London site at 11, Bedford Square WC1. This latter facility optimises access for practitioners studying part time from our partner agencies based within London. The Bedford Square base is also a pleasant reminder of our roots in Bedford College - the first women's college in England founded in 1849 and first located in Bedford Square.
