Private Sector top tip:

You should always remember that signing a contract to a house is a big commitment. Financially you are committing yourself to paying rent for up to a year, and personally you are committing to living in the same place with the same housemates for a year. If you allow yourself to be pressured into a situation which you are not happy with, then you may cause yourself problems in the long run. Therefore, we would caution you to be confident in your decision before you sign a legally binding contract.

Regardless of whether you intend to find housing through our private sector website or not, you are welcome to contact either the Student Housing Bureau (01784 443338) or the Students’ Union – Student Advice Centre (01784 486300) for more advice.

More information for students

Please be aware that The Student Housing Bureau does not inspect private sector properties advertised on the private sector HouseSearch website and therefore cannot guarantee their condition, safety or suitability. It is the responsibility of the student to view the accommodation and determine this. Accredited properties are clearly identifiable on the HouseSearch website - they have a light blue background and appear at the top of all search results - these properties have been inspected by Runnymede Borough Council who have determined that the property meets a certain standard; to find out more visit their website|.
