Campus and facilities

Our 135 acre campus, named  one of the most beautiful in the world |by the Daily Telegraph, is a lively and friendly place to live, study and socialise. But what really sets us apart from other universities? Our strong sense of community

The impressive Founder’s Building, at the heart of our campus, is home to the famous Picture Gallery| containing our founder Thomas Holloway’s spectacular collection of Victorian paintings. You’ll also find the Chapel| and more than 500 students who call Founder’s home, many of whom liken it to living in a castle or Hogwarts!

Investment

Our campus continues to be enhanced thanks to our multi-million pound estate investment programme, which also ensures award-winning modern additions such as the Windsor Building, new drama studio and halls of residence, which sit comfortably alongside the historic buildings. Beyond the buildings, you can explore acres of surrounding woodland and open spaces full of wildlife.

When you’re a student at Royal Holloway, you’ll find all the facilities you need on campus while we continue to invest in new ones and improve the standard of what we already have.

Accommodation facilities

You can choose from a wide variety of on-campus accommodation within a few minutes’ walk of all the teaching and social facilities. This is with the exception of  Kingswood Hall, which is one mile away from campus and connected by a free bus service.

Whether you opt for self-catered or catered-pay-as-you-go accommodation, your halls will be well-equipped, and launderettes are located across campus.

Take a look at our accommodation| pages for more information.

Bank

The on-campus branch of Santander gives you access to an ATM 24 hours a day, as well as offering a counter service if you want to open an account or have queries.

Other major banks and building societies have branches nearby.

Bookshop

Having a bookshop on-campus means you don’t have to go far to find the texts required for your course.

John Smith's is currently our bookshop providers and was voted Academic & Professional Chain Bookseller of the year 2012.

You can find the bookshop in Founder's West, or online|.

College shop

The ‘Store on-campus’ is open throughout the year and offers a wide selection of groceries, frozen and chilled food, wines and beers, toiletries, stationery, birthday cards, gifts and College memorabilia.

Library and academic facilities

Royal Holloway's extensive library| has a stock of more than 600,000 volumes, subscribes to over 17,000 print and online journals, and has more than 800 study spaces.

We recently invested £1.3 million in a refurbishment project to further develop library resources and facilities, and introduce innovative learning spaces. You can also access all University of London libraries including Senate House Library.  |

A number of PC labs containing a wide range of software applications are available within the Computer Centre and around campus, most of which are accessible 24 hours a day. There is a wireless network which enables access throughout most of the College.

Each academic department has their own facilities. For example, the Psychology department is one of the very few in the UK to have a magnetic resonance scanner on site for neuroscientific research, and the department of Earth Sciences has an impressive 3D visualisation facility and IT laboratories, enabling students to view satellite imagery and seismic data in 3D.

Entertainment venues

The Students’ Union| provides safe and fun places for our students to socialise.

There’s the main function space, the Student Union Main Hall, hosting at least two events per week, plus three pubs and bars, each with their own identity.

You can find out more about SURHUL venues here.|

Places to eat and drink

With six catering outlets on the main campus, and a further two in halls of residence, there’s plenty of choice when it comes to grabbing a bite to eat. Check  'Meet, eat & drink'| for an overview.
