How we assess your application

Once your application has been received, it will be assessed by the Admissions Office and Course Director of your chosen course. They will be focusing on:

  • if your undergraduate degree has been completed, your classification and course units taken. If you haven’t yet completed it they will look at your progress to date
  • your supporting statement and motivation to study your chosen course
  • your work experience (only applications to MBA International Management)
  • your references

Interviews and examples of work

Offers are usually made without interviews or submission of written work. However, a few subjects do require further information before they can make a decision on your application.

If you’re applying for courses in English, Drama, Media Arts and Music you may be required to submit examples of written work and invited to an interview. The MBA International Management requires all students to undertake a telephone interview.

Check individual course finder entries to see if your course has specific requirements. If overseas students cannot attend an interview, alternative arrangements will be made where possible.

Supporting statement

The supporting statement forms an important part of your application to a postgraduate course.

Before writing your statement review the details of the department you’re applying to and its strengths and research areas. Also review the details of the course and its individual course units.

We suggest including:

  • Why would you like to study this particular course? Are there particular course units that appeal to you? Do you have a particular interest in certain areas of the course?
  • Why would you like to study this subject area? Is it an area you have studied before? If not, where does your interest come from - give examples. What have you studied before, or what skills/interests do you have that are appropriate to your chosen course?
  • What academic skills do you have? How can you show these - give examples relevant to your chosen course.
  • What personal skills do you have and what are your individual strengths? Do you work well in a team, or have great communication skills? Are you good at networking or dealing with a range of people? These and other skills may be useful in your course - give examples that demonstrate your skills.
  • What are your career aims, and how do you hope this course will help you pursue them? Will particular course units, or the course as a whole, provide you with skills you think will be useful for your future?
