How to apply

Applications to research degrees at Royal Holloway can be made online. However, before you make an application to study with us, please read the information on the application process below.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements are usually a first class honours or 2:1 degree from an approved UK or overseas university. Overseas students must also meet the requirements for English language| (IELTS or TOEFL).

Individual departments have their own entry requirements and prospective students are encouraged to contact their chosen department for more information.

Specific requirements for the application may vary, depending on the school or department you are applying to, however most will require a brief research proposal that should be submitted along with the online application form

Your potential supervisor will be able to assist you with the department-specific application requirements but if you are in doubt please contact the postgraduate administrator or Director of Graduate Studies| for further guidance.

Application process for research degrees

1. Make informal enquiries

You are encouraged to contact the postgraduate administrator, or director of graduate studies, for specific information on current opportunities available and to see if there is a member of staff who may be interested in overseeing your research.

You need to provide details about your research interests as well as a summary of your academic qualifications (a brief one to two page CV will be useful) and if you are self-funded or require funding.

Your enquiry will then be forwarded to the relevant members of staff who will be able to provide detailed guidance on what is required for an application.

2. Submit an application

When you have secured a supervisor for your research project you should then submit an application form using the online application system| for 2013 (you can still access the 2012 online application system| to retrieve applications that you have already started).

One of the most important aspects of your application is the research proposal. Typically a research proposal should describe the academic background to the research as well as providing some aims of the project and the research methods to be used.

Your potential supervisor will be able to help you with the discipline-specific requirements for the research proposal.

3. Required documents

The application should be completed using the online application system|, and it is important to state on this form if you want to study full- or part-time, and if you are a self-funded student or applying for a specific source of funding (scholarship).

Additional documents can be uploaded directly onto the online application system. These can include some or all of the following:

  • a brief research proposal
  • academic transcripts
  • English language qualifications, if your first language is not English
  • academic references
  • resume or CV (if available) to show published work and any industrial experience.
