Royal Holloway doctoral awards worth £4 million

As a renowned world-class institution, Royal Holloway is committed to supporting and developing the next generation of researchers

We recognise that funding is often an obstacle for talented students, and for this reason we have Royal Holloway Scholarships worth £4 million available to research students starting in 2013

What is a scholarship?

Scholarships take the form of a fee waiver or maintenance award or a combination of both, so if you’re enthusiastic about pursuing a research degree but are concerned about how to finance it, a Royal Holloway Scholarship can lighten the load.

Royal Holloway scholarships are listed below and in addition we offer a host of awards from the major UK Research Councils|.

Nurturing research

As well as the substantial financial support on offer, Royal Holloway nurtures its research students through tailored programmes of research skills training |and active participation in the academic life of the College. Research students at Royal Holloway are both beneficiaries of, and contributors to, our research excellence.

Research councils

Research Councils provide competitive funding for UK and European Union residents to study specific Master's programmes and research degrees in a range of areas.

A list of research councils, including the AHRC (Arts and Humanities Research Council), and further information on how to apply can be found on the Research Councils| page.

External Funding

Here at Royal Holloway the Student Finance and Funding team can help you look for outside funding from charities / organisations that are able to distribute money to students depending on their individual need and circumstances.

We recommend you look for funding around six to nine months before the start of your course! This is to ensure you have enough time to apply and receive responses / funds (where accepted).

All you need to do is complete the funding questionnaire| form and return this to FinancialAdvice  |.

We then put this information through several search tools we have.

International students

Individual departments may make an additional contribution to the value of the stipend for the above College research awards, and this may be linked to teaching in the department. Please contact your chosen department  for further information.

Although students applying from outside the European Union will not be able to apply for sponsorship from UK Research Councils, your own government may provide a scholarship scheme to help you study overseas, or there may be banks in your country that offer international student loans.

If you are applying from the USA you may be eligible for Direct Stafford and PLUS Federal loans, and veterans’ benefits if you are a veteran of the US Military.

If you are applying from Canada you may be eligible for loans from your government. Further information can be found on our North American funding page|.

Your local British Council office should be able to provide information on scholarship and loan schemes available in your country, as well as general scholarship schemes that you may be eligible for. Further information is available on their website|.
